Nobody Teaches This Anymore. And It’s Costing Us.

What we lost when we stopped forming citizens and why assimilation isn’t just an immigrant issue anymore.

Hi friends,

We still have a citizenship oath in America. But somewhere along the way, we stopped teaching what it means. Not just to immigrants, but to all of us.

This episode isn’t really about immigration. It’s about assimilation. A word that’s gotten a bad reputation but at its core is about learning how to live well in a shared space. Knowing the rules. Taking responsibility. Showing up for a civic life that’s bigger than just personal rights.

What happens when that formation disappears?

We end up where we are now. Fractured, frustrated, and often talking past each other. From skipping jury duty to defrauding public systems, the signs are everywhere that we’ve lost the thread of what it means to be a citizen. And without that foundation, the country starts to feel less like a community and more like a chaotic competition.

In this episode, we’ll look at how other nations approach civic formation, why assimilation isn’t about losing your heritage, and how native-born Americans are just as in need of it as anyone else.

Hard questions. Thoughtful reflection. No easy answers.

Agree? Disagree? I’d love to hear what stood out to you and what you think we could be doing better. Come share your thoughts in the InSight Out Community on Facebook.

Have a blessed week!

Devin
