You’re Not Opting In. You’re Being Worn Down.
What “free” plans and assumed consent reveal about the systems shaping our lives.

Hi friends,
Lately, I’ve noticed how much time and money we spend just trying to undo things we never asked for.
Subscriptions we didn’t really choose. Content pushed into our homes. Ads, upgrades, filters, controls…layer upon layer of friction that we’re told is just “how it works now.” If we don’t like it, the responsibility shifts to us to opt out, pay more, or manage the mess ourselves.
And it’s exhausting!
This episode isn’t really about streaming services or apps. It’s about design. About a system that increasingly assumes access first and consent later. Where “free” plans are intentionally frustrating, and peace only comes once you upgrade. Where opting out is possible, but never simple.
What happens when frustration becomes the business model?
We end up tired. Distracted. Worn down. Spending our energy managing noise instead of living. And over time, that does something to us.
I think this opt-out or assumed-consent strategy is wrong. And frankly, backwards. When companies profit by creating problems and then selling the escape, something is off. It’s a subtle form of modern, digital oppression, no? 🧐
It just comes with a monthly billing cycle.
So, let’s just take a careful and somewhat funny look at what’s happening and why paying attention matters.
Agree? Disagree? Or have you run into this yourself? Come share what stood out to you and what you’ve experienced. Come share your thoughts in the InSight Out Community on Facebook.
Have a blessed week!
